Seminar: The schizophrenia brain: from genes to behavior (a.a. 2019/20)

Programma

Emil Kraepelin, identified by many as the founder of modern scientific psychiatry, hypothesized that “like a tree whose roots do not find nourishment in their soil dies, in the same way, when psychic deficits occur, we can hypothesize underlying alterations in the structure and functioning of the brain cortex”. Over a century after Kraepelin’s description of schizophrenia, several biological alterations have been identified, however many dots still have to be connected. The seminar will provide an overview of the main factors implicated in the etiopathogenesis of schizophrenia, discussing gene-environment interaction trough epigenetics and microbiome. It will also focus on the pathway leading to symptoms from genetic, cellular and system level alterations.
