Issues in neurolinguistics and neuropragmatics a.y. 2021/22
Programma
Neurolinguistics investigates which linguistic categories are relevant for the brain, and how they are implemented. As part of neurolinguistics, neuropragmatics focuses on the neural response to the pragmatic aspects of language, such as context-dependent meanings and discourse. The first part of the course will introduce the students to the main approaches in neurolinguistics research (mainly studies on clinical populations, functional and structural neuroimaging, EEG), illustrating also some of the main achievements in the study of grammatical and semantics aspects of language. The second part will focus on pragmatics, showing the complex interplay of linguistic and cognitive functions involved in processing implicit meanings, and the vulnerability of pragmatic abilities in pathological conditions. The course is complemented by the seminar “The neuropragmatics of humor and irony”, taught by Luca Bischetti.
