The II Level University Master Programme in Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology is part of the academic activities organised within the framework of the “Centre for Training and Research on Reduction of Seismic Risk” - ROSE, created by IUSS in order to meet society's increasing need to study, understand and manage extreme events.
The Master Programme was established in the fall of 2000, with the aim of providing a highly specialized level of training in the field of seismic engineering and seismology. The course program offers a range of topics ranging from applied mechanics to structural engineering, to applied seismology, to land dynamics, with particular attention to both theoretical and design aspects.
In the last academic years (last edition a.y. 2017/2018) the Master was offered as an 18-month ERASMUS PLUS - MEEES program, with mobility, which foresaw the final achievement of a degree jointly awarded by IUSS, the University of Grenoble Alpes (UGA), the University of Patras (UNIPAT) and the Middle East Technical University of Ankara (METU).
All lecturers are internationally recognized experts in their field, coming from renowned institutions all over the world. The academic offer, held entirely in English, consist of intensive courses lasting four to six weeks, during which the teacher is dedicated full time to the teaching activity, ensuring a high level of assistance and training.
Students are required to attend courses and prepare a thesis at at least two of the four partner institutions (IUSS-Pavia, University of Grenoble-Alpes, University of Patras and Middle East Technical University of Ankara).
As for IUSS, the educational activities of the program are carried out in classrooms, laboratories and reserved spaces. The school relies on advanced facilities for numerical and experimental research, including the Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture (DICAr) of the University of Pavia and the European Center for Training and Research in Earthquake Engineering (EUCENTRE).
These are the characteristics which make IUSS' teaching system unique, both from the point of view of the international environment in which it is developed, and the innovative nature of research and training in the field of seismic engineering and seismology.
The Master aims to train operators with strong scientific and professional skills, aware of the cultural, technical and management contents of seismic engineering. In particular, aspects of seismology, geology, geotechnics, behavior of materials and structures, structural analysis, design of new structures and adaptation of existing structures are developed.
The Master Programme is entirely taught in english.
