The Department of Humanities and Life Sciences promotes teaching and research in the Area of Humanities and the Area of Life Sciences. Members of the Department specialize in three main research fields: Linguistics, Cognitive Neurosciences, and Philosophy. 

The active interaction among these fields is driven by a global understanding of human sciences, moving from their biological bases and extending to the study of the psychological processes underlying decision-making, to formal theorizing about language, and to the epistemological reflection on the nature of mind and logico-mathematical thought.

The Department supports highly interdisciplinary research projects and fosters integration between undergraduate and post-graduate teaching. Courses and seminars are offered both on the major research fields, and on a broader range of topics - also thanks to classes delivered by distinguished external professors - covering all the disciplinary areas of the Faculties to which its students are enrolled. Highly qualified master programs are also activated. 

At both undergraduate, post-graduate and scholarly level, the Department encourages training, research and internationalization through dedicated PhD Programs, Research Centres and Laboratories, also thanks to scientific partnerships both within the Federation among the three Schools of Advanced Study, and within a vast network of national and international partner Universities and research institutes.

Didattica
Integrazione tra didattica e ricerca che si concretizza in una forte interazione tra i corsi pre- e post-laurea con le attività di ricerca nelle discipline scientifiche afferenti: scienze matematiche, fisiche e della terra, ingegneria, scienze giuridiche, economiche e sociali.

Ricerca 
La quantificazione del rischio mediante l’uso di metodi statistici e probabilistici per la modellazione dell’occorrenza di eventi estremi sia naturali, quali terremoti, alluvioni e cicloni sia tropicali sia extra-tropicali, che antropici e delle loro conseguenze sulla popolazione, sugli edifici e sulle infrastrutture. 
La mitigazione del rischio sia tramite interventi diretti, come il rafforzamento strutturale, sia indiretti quali gli strumenti giuridici, gli strumenti assicurativi ed i modelli istituzionali per il finanziamento e il trasferimento del rischio. 
L’osservazione dallo spazio della terra e dello spazio.
