Understanding and Managing Extremes

PhD in Understanding and Managing Extremes is a 48-months full-time joint Programme with Università degli Studi di Pavia and with EUCENTRE Foundation.
The UME PhD aims to train graduates and professionals with strong scientific and professionals capabilities, aware of the cultural, technical and management contents related to the understanding and management of the extreme situations caused by natural disasters. The key areas of study of the curriculum "Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology" include topics related to seismology, geophysics, geology, geotechnical behavior of materials and structures, structural analysis, design of new structures and assessment existing structures. The broad and interdisciplinary "Weather, geological, chenmical and environment risk" includes, in addition to the basics of physics, fuid mechanics, climatology, environmental monitoring and climate change, issues related to the specialization areas of "soil atmosphere", "ocean atmosphere" and " assessment and management of chemical risks" for devising meaningful damage and risk scenario and for identifying efficient risk mitigation strategies.
The PhD Programme has been designed to deal with three main areas:
  • disaster risk assessment, focusing mainly on natural hazards such as earthquakes hurricanes, fires, landslides and floods (with possible extensions to the topics of climatology, desertification, human-made and technological risks, environmental and chemical risks, etc.)
  • extreme situation management, which includes topics of statistics and probability, law, economics, resource management, finance, insurance, sociology, ethics, psychology and medicine.
  • engineering for risk mitigation, which includes topics on engineering to increase the capacity of buildings and infrastructure to withstand the demands from extreme events.
The doctoral programme aims to train graduates and professionals in the assessment, mitigation and management of extreme events (both before and after they occur), with a particular focus on those arising from natural hazards though some aspects of human-made, technological and biomedical risk will also be covered.

  • Earthquake Engineering and Seismology

    Career opportunities:

 The UME PhD graduates will be easily employed in universities, national and international research and academic institutions, private companies working in the field of structural design or catastrophe/disaster risk management (e.g. insurance and reinsurance companies), international institutions (such as UN-ISDR), national civil defence agencies, risk modellers or brokers.
