June 28th, 2010: Prof. Franco Brezzi has been awarded the Gili Agostinelli Prize 2010

Gili Agostinelli Prize 2010 was awarded to Franco Brezzi by the Accademia delle Scienze di Torino.

The Prize is intended to apply mathematics on the physical or natural sciences or engineering fields.

Franco Brezzi has authored over 180 scientific publications for the most prestigious international journals. His research interests focused and cover the field of numerical methods for partial differential equations, especially in relation to problems from various engineering fields. In particular he worked on finite element methods.  
Among the many important awards and / or prizes awarded to him are reported in particular the Gauss-Newton Medal in 2004 and the SIAM von Neumann Award in 2009. "

July 19-24 and September 21-23, 2010: HDCP-IRC at WOCMES in Barcelona and HDCA annual congress in Amman

Two international appointments for the Research centre at IUSS "HDCP" headed by Prof.ssa Enrica Chiappero-Martinetti who is in charge of the scientific organization of the international Conference in Barcelona (WOCMES) and of the  annual meeting of the Human Development and Capability Association (HDCA).

The first meeting will be held in  Barcellona from 19th to 24th of July; the Centre  HDCP and the University of Pavia will  present the panel “Toward an Integrated View of Human Rights and Human Development:Theoretical Foundations, Measurement Issues and Policy Implications in Jordan”.

The second meeting is referred to the annual meeting of the Human Development and Capability Association (HDCA) and it will be held in Amman (Jordan) from 21st to  23rd of September. 
On this occasion the Iuss Centre HDCP and the University of Pavia will present the panel “Human Development and human rights in Jordan: a multidimensional view".

September 1-3, 2010: Workshop "Toleration and respect: concepts, justifications and applications"

The workshop will be held on September 1-3 at Manchester Metropolitan University.

The event is jointly organized by the Institute for Advanced Study of Pavia (IUSS), the University of Pavia and the Roskilde University and represents  an occasion to engage in debates leading to a more systematic exploration of the intricate relations, conceptual and practical, between the two ideas. In particular, papers could address one (or more) of the following issues: concepts of toleration and respect, justifications of toleration and respect, applications
