Since 1997, the Institute for Advanced Study (IUSS) has activated an International Master Program in Cooperation and Development (Master CD).
The growing importance of international development work and the increasing significance of international markets underline the need of a Program at the postgraduate level which trains practitioners in this field, individuals offering both specific professional skills and flexibility in order to meet the growing demands of the new world labour market. Citizens of the 21st century will need to be familiar with far more complex and new histories and geographies. Every development practitioner will eventually go through a phase of change and redefinition.
The cooperative effort between IUSS, University of Pavia, CISP, COOPI, and VIS, which is supported by the General Directorate for Cooperation and Development, Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has made it possible to offer this important post-graduate training course, a true novelty among the Master programs available in Italy today. It allows us to offer students the chance to acquire an excellent theoretical background as well as practical skills, and the possibility to analyze actual case studies of development projects by way of an internship in a developing country.
Programme
The programme comprehends a theoretic part lasting 7 months, usually from November to June, and taking place in Pavia. It comprises around 500 hours of classes and deepens the knowledge of Economics, Social and Managerial aspects related to Development and Cooperation.
The Master is fully taught in English.
After the period in Pavia all students must carry out an internship which usually lasts between 3 and 6 months.
Students go on the field or in the headquarters of NGOs, International Organizations and Governmental Institutions and have the great opportunity of earning first-hand experience by working side by side with professionals in the field of Cooperation and Development.
During the internship, students must write a thesis linked to their experience or to a research issue of their interest. After the discussion of this final thesis students will be awarded the Master Diploma.
The program provides approximately 500 hours of class, for an overall weight of 75 ECTS.

2004-2005 Edition
This Master is absolutely worthwhile because it offers the possibility to deepen many theoretical aspects related to development - in particular, there are many passionate professors who are able to make everyone, independently from her/his academic background, familiar with the principles of world economics – and at the same time to make a really qualified experience at practical level.
The great variety of inputs I received during the Master allowed me to develop a broader concept of cooperation, so that at the end of the course I chose to do a rather original job dealing with biodiversity in developing countries with the International Slow Food Foundation.
However, in my opinion, the greatest strength of the Master are the people who make it: students from all over the world, professors and experts. All of them are competent, enthusiastic and immensely rich in humanity. For sure, the solid network of relationships the Master is able to build is its great added value.
