A great success of our students in Material Science
]]>Master has been devoted to advanced materials for micro-electronics, photonics, and energy control and management.
In these areas, the Master benefits from strong interactions with industries and research centres playing a leading role in applied research, and plans its teaching activity according to their requests for experts in innovative materials.
Placement results: almost half of the students of the 9^th edition (February 2006 - January 2007) have already reached a permanent position in the hosting institutions at the start of their internship. Most of the others are completing their internship abroad, in particular at the microelectronics centre IMEC (Leuven, B). The 2007 edition is planned on the same subjects.

A former student of the Master in Cooperation and Development has been awarded the EADI prize
]]>EADI prize for the best paper on development.
Francesca has been the winner among 50 competitors from all over Europe. The prize has been awarded on Thursday the 2nd of November at the University of Sussex during a meeting of sixty Directors of research centres belonging to EADI - European Association of Research and Training Developent Institutes, the largest european association of research institutes.
Francesca won with a paper entitled "What thesaurus to define EU/ACP relations? Analysis of the term development in the thesaurus of the EU and other International Organizations". Advisor Marco Mozzati.

]]>The workshop related to the research project: ‘Toward an integrated view of human rights and human development: theoretical foundations, measurement issues and policy implications’, will be taking place at the University of Jordan in Amman formally starting the collaboration between Italian and Jordan universities.

“IQUAL: A DYNAMIC MODEL FOR ASSESSING QUALITY OF LIFE AND EVALUATING THE IMPACT OF PUBLIC POLICIES”

In this open seminar the results of a two-year research project on “Quality of life and sustainable human development in an affluent society” which was coordinated by Enrica Chiappero-Martinetti and Stefano Pareglio, will be presented. The overall purpose of this project was to conceptualize the well-being-generating process and to implement a policy modelling based on the capability approach that could allow: i) to describe the well-being-generating process from a complex and multidimensional perspective, ii) to assess empirically the quality of life and measure the sustainability of this processes in an affluent society (namely, in Italy), iii) to simulate public policies, measure the impact of alternative patterns of public expenditure on individual well-being and evaluate their sustainability in terms of human development.

In this seminar four papers will be presented by the research group highlighting the theoretical underpinning and analytical features of IQUAL (i.e. Individual QUAlity of Life Model), the methodological assumptions and the empirical results of estimation of both the macro and the micro side of the model and, finally, the impact of the policy simulations on individual well-being. The proposed model allows to simulate and evaluate what could be the potential impact of a change in the public provision of goods and services on individual well-being and to introduce some assumptions on how external (socio-economic or institutional) factors can affect both the public production process as well as the individual well-being production.

The empirical analysis is based on Italian statistical data (both aggregate as well as micro-data sets) and takes into consideration four functionings (“being healthy”, “being educated”, “living in secure environment”, and “living in a safe and clean environment”) and six subgroups of population identified according gender and age criteria (young, adult and elderly; men and women).

]]>The agreement provides that first and second floor of the palace, on the side overlooking Piazza della Vittoria, will be granted for thirty years exclusively to IUSS; in exchange, IUSS will bear the costs of the reconstraction of the building.
The defined agreement is the symbol of a meeting of interests between those institutions and it is a clear sign of a synergy underlining the characteristic of Pavia, academic city.

Site: Via L. Porta n.10 - Pavia

The CAR College, an international College for Civil Protection named after Cardinale Agostino Riboldi, has been purposely refurbished to serve as an international hosting facility for postgraduate students and visiting scholars working in the field of natural risk mitigation.
In addition to the formal interventions and speeches, a live music concert is also scheduled to take place at the Auditorium of the College, a church designed by Richini and constructed between 1628 and 1632.

EUCENTRE won the competion for GEM Project
]]>On Friday 21st November 2008, in a unanimous vote from the Acting Governing Board, Italy was chosen to host the GEM Project (Global Earthquake Model), an initiative of the Global Science Forum of the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development).

During the final contest to win the project, which was between Italy and Germany, the Italian proposal was presented and backed by the president of the EUCENTRE, Gian Michele Calvi, who was joined by the scientific attaché of the Italian OECD Embassy, Franco Malerba, known for having been the first Italian astronaut in space, and by Massimiliano Stucchi of the INGV.
The Italian proposal was deemed to be superior under all of the considered categories and it was particularly praised for its contents and originality, the pledged economic and human resources, the prestige of the host institution and for its elegant presentation.

The legal status for GEM should be an Inter-Governmental Organisation (IGO) and it will be hosted at Eucentre in Pavia.

]]>During 2009, the European Commission will be launching a new project for cooperation between universities in the EU and the Gulf countries. The programme will take the shape of a large network or/and an Erasmus Mundus external cooperation window within the new Erasmus Mundus. The new programme will cover Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain and Oman.

In order to facilitate the preparation of project proposals, the European Commission Delegation in Riyadh is preparing a Higher Education event to which will be invited all the universities in the Gulf region as well as representatives from Higher Education Ministries. The launching conference will take place 21st-22nd April 2009. It will represent a good opportunity for those wishing to form partnership with a view to submitting project proposals, as well as for those wishing to promote their current projects.

]]>The Summer School on Structural Change: Analyses, Experiences and Methodologies will be held in Pavia in June 3-16, 2009. The course is a joint initiative of the Institute for Advanced Study, the University of Pavia and the University of Insubria.

The Summer School addresses PhD students in Economics, young economists, civil servants and policy-makers of international financial institutions. It is an intensive, residential program characterized by frontal lectures and lab applications.

Candidates are requested to fill in the registration form and send it before April 30th 2009.

It aims to provide higher-level education in the field of earthquake engineering and seismology. The syllabus offers a comprehensive set of subjects covering applied mechanics, structural engineering, earthquake engineering, engineering seismology and soil dynamics, with emphasis on both theoretical background and design considerations.

It is required a University Degree or past professional experience in civil/environmental engineering, geology, geophysics, physics, applied mathematics.
An adequate command of the English language is required.

It is organized in collaboration with the Italian NGO's Cisp, Coopi, Vis and the University of Pavia.

]]>As a part of the Centre for Post-Graduate Training and Research in Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology (internationally known as ROSE School) programme, an International seminar is organised every year, to provide the students with an opportunity to present and discuss their research work to an audience of international experts.
In addition to standard presentations on research work carried out at the Centre, the annual Seminars feature also the tradition of inviting a prominent scientist to deliver a keynote lecture on a given contemporary and highly relevant topic in the field of Earthquake Engineering.
At this year’s event, such keynote address will be delivered by Professor Shunsuke Otani with the title “Early age of earthquake engineering and engineering education”.
The Seminar coincides also with the main Graduation and Diploma Award Ceremony of the ROSE School, featuring the presence of Rectors from the four higher education institutions (IUSS, Università degli Studi di Pavia, Université Joseph Fourier de Grenoble ed University of Patras) involved in the Masters programme recognized by the European Commission.

]]>The first Workshop "Human rights and human development: linkages and complementarities among dimensions" will take place on the 9th of June 2009 (9.30), at Aula Grande, Faculty of Political Science - University of Pavia.
This workshop, organised jointly by University of Pavia and the Human Development, Capability and Poverty International Research Centre, Institute for Advanced Study (Pavia), is aimed to present and discuss the intermediate results of a FIRB research project on “Toward an integrated view of human rights and human development: theoretical foundations, measurement issues and policy implications” supported by the Minister of Higher Education, coordinated by the Institute for Advanced Study and in partnership with the Universities of Pavia, Padua and Jordan. A special attention will be devoted to the identification of possible linkages between economic and social rights and human development dimensions and their use for policy implementation.

The second Workshop "Human rights and human development: policy implications and monitoring" will take place on the 10th of June 2009 (9.30), at Aula Magna Collegio Cairoli - Piazza Cairoli 1, Pavia.

The course is a joint initiative of the Institute for Advanced Study, the University of Pavia and the University of Insubria.

The Summer School addresses to PhD students in Economics, young economists, civil servants and policy-makers of international financial institutions. It is an intensive, residential program characterized by frontal lectures and lab applications.
The course aims at providing participants with the main theories of structuralist and heterodox economics and economic policies, and to teach them how to build CGE models.

The participants are about 35 coming from different countries: ETIOPIA, MAURITIUS, REP. DEMOCRATICA DEL CONGO, TANZANIA, NIGERIA, MOZAMBICO, PALESTINA, GERMANY, FRANCIE AND ITALY.

]]>The Project RESPECT To,wards a “Topography” of Tolerance and Equal Respect. A comparative study of policies for the distribution of public spaces in culturally diverse societies, has been approved by the European Commission within the Seventh Framework Programme.

Coordinator of the project, which include 14 european and extra-european universities, is Emanuela Ceva at the IUSS Centre HDCP-IRC - Human Development, Capability and Poverty International Research Centre, directed by Enrica Chiappero.

The project will last 2 years and is expected to start on January 2010.
Current status: financial negotiation

The RESPECT project will explore the extent, if any, to which the implementation of tolerance-inspired policies risks undermining the pursuit of such basic democratic commitments, and – if so – what conception of tolerance, grounded on what bases, may be invoked so as to limit such a risk.

]]>The residential course of study "Collegium of Roman Law" organized by CEDANT (Centre for Studies and Research on Roman Law at IUSS) will be held from 11^th to 29^th of January 2010 at Almo Collegio Borromeo in Pavia.

For the academic year 2009-2010 the proposed theme is "Leges publicae. Statutes in the Roman Legal System" under the direction of Jean-Louis Ferrary (École Pratique des Hautes Études, Paris).

The "Collegium" consists of three weeks of lectures presented by university professors to young researchers previously selected and interested in the theme. The seminars are structured to encourage scholarly exchange and discussion too. At the same time, each participant is invited to contribute actively to the development and pursuit of research.

]]>The Ph.D programme in Economics Law and Isntitutions, ELI (formerly EPOG) announce the Summer School "Access to Justice and Litigation".

It will be held at IUSS - Aula Magna, Viale Lungo Ticino Sforza 56, Pavia from 21st to 25th of June 2010.

The aim of this summers school is to offer a law and economics perspective on the access to and the functioning of the justice system.
Access to justice is the possibility for victims of crimes, torts, breach of contract, trespass or other infringements, to find redress in the law.

Program

The course is open to graduate students (maximum 30) and faculty members (maximum 15).

]]>The Master Course in Engineering and Engineering Seismology is now at its 11th edition.
It aims to provide higher-level education in the field of earthquake engineering and seismology. The syllabus offers a comprehensive set of subjects covering applied mechanics, structural engineering, earthquake engineering, engineering seismology and soil dynamics, with emphasis on both theoretical background and design considerations.

It is required a University Degree or past professional experience in civil/environmental engineering, geology, geophysics, physics, applied mathematics.
An adequate command of the English language is required.

Discussions of the ideas of toleration and respect have animated vivid and ongoing debates in political and moral philosophy during the last decades. The formulations given to the idea of toleration have come to range from the negative appeal to non-interference to the positive recognition of difference. In a similar vein, the idea of respect has been object of some serious reformulation building on the works of neo-Kantians up to the most recent applications to issues of cultural diversity and religious liberty.
However, the sophistication of the dicussions revolving around each of the two ideas has not been accompanied by a clarification of their reciprocal conceptual and normative relations, thus leading, in fact, to a blurring of the lines between them.
On this backdrop, the workshop will offer an occasion to engage in debates leading to a more systematic exploration of the intricate relations, conceptual and practical, between the two ideas.

]]>Il Direttore dello IUSS e presidente del Comitato scientifico di Expo Milano 2015, Roberto Schmid, partecipa oggi a New Yourk alla quinta Conferenza sullo sviluppo degli Stati del Sud Pacifico che si svolge presso la Rappresentanza permanente dell'Italia alla sede delle Nazioni Unite.

Il meeting si inserisce nel programma di cooperazione, sostenuto dal Ministero dell'Ambiente italiano in collaborazione con Milano e il Ministero deli Esteri autriaco, che annovera il prof. Schmid tra gli animatori fin dal 2008.

Ad uno dei progetti del programma partecipa il Centro di ricerca per la Simulazione Numerica Avanzata dello IUSS, diretto dal prof. Franco Brezzi.

]]>As a part of the Centre for Post-Graduate Training and Research in Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology programme (internationally known as ROSE School), an International Seminar is organised every year, to provide the students with an opportunity to present and discuss their research work to an audience of international experts.
In addition to standard presentations on research work carried out at the Centre, the annual Seminars feature also the tradition of inviting a prominent scientist to deliver a keynote lecture on a given contemporary and highly relevant topic in the field of Earthquake Engineering.
At this year’s event, such keynote address will be delivered by Professor T-C. Pan, Nanyang technological University with the title “Seismic Hazard of Low/Moderate Seismicity Regions”.

The Seminar coincides also with the main Graduation and Diploma Award Ceremony of the ROSE School adn the Award of ROSE Prize 2010.

]]>On the 16th and 17th of September 2010 the Human Development, Capability and Poverty International Research Centre at the Institute for Advanced Study of Pavia (Italy),under the joint patronage of the Italian Society for Political Philosophy and the Italian Society for Analytic Philosophy, will host the eighth edition of the Pavia Graduate Conference in Political Philosophy.

This two-day conference is meant to offer graduate students an opportunity to present papers, get helpful feedback in a friendly atmosphere, and exchange ideas both with peers and with leading academics in the field of political philosophy.

This year’s keynote speakers will be:

Adam Swift (Balliol College, Oxford) speaking on "Parents' Rights, Children's Schools: Shaping Values, Conferring Advantage"
Valeria Ottonelli (University of Genova) speaking on "Equla Respect, Democracy and Political Agency"

The cooperative effort between IUSS, University of Pavia, CISP, COOPI, and VIS, which is supported by the General Directorate for Cooperation and Development, Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has made it possible to offer this important post-graduate training course.

It allows us to offer students the chance to acquire an excellent theoretical background as well as practical skills, and the possibility to analyze actual case studies of development projects by way of an internship in a developing country.

]]>Gili Agostinelli Prize 2010 was awarded to Franco Brezzi by the Accademia delle Scienze di Torino.

The Prize is intended to apply mathematics on the physical or natural sciences or engineering fields.

Franco Brezzi has authored over 180 scientific publications for the most prestigious international journals. His research interests focused and cover the field of numerical methods for partial differential equations, especially in relation to problems from various engineering fields. In particular he worked on finite element methods.
Among the many important awards and / or prizes awarded to him are reported in particular the Gauss-Newton Medal in 2004 and the SIAM von Neumann Award in 2009. "

]]>Within the European project "ITN EDUWEL as Welfare-Education: Enhancing Opportunities for Socially Vulnerable Youth in Europe" the Research Centre of IUSS "HDCP-IRC" will organize a Summer School from 11th to 19th of September 2010.
The Summer School will be attended by 15 Early Stage Researcher from various European countries that were successfully selected by the Marie Curie-Eduwel call.

]]>Two international appointments for the Research centre at IUSS "HDCP" headed by Prof.ssa Enrica Chiappero-Martinetti who is in charge of the scientific organization of the international Conference in Barcelona (WOCMES) and of the annual meeting of the Human Development and Capability Association (HDCA).

The first meeting will be held in Barcellona from 19th to 24th of July; the Centre HDCP and the University of Pavia will present the panel “Toward an Integrated View of Human Rights and Human Development:Theoretical Foundations, Measurement Issues and Policy Implications in Jordan”.

]]>Prize Plottel 2010 has recently been awarded to Dario Mantovani, Director of the Centre for Studies and Research on Ancient Law (Cedant), by the Académie des Inscriptions e Belles Lettres in Paris, which is part of the Institut de France.

The prize, established in 2008, is intended to promote the activities of excellence in classical studies.

]]>The sixteenth edition of the International Design Seminar, organized by the Institute for Advanced Study (IUSS Pavia), in collaboration with the Tongji University in Shanghai, will be held from 8th October to 19th October in Shanghai.
The Seminar will be focused on the after use of the EXPO 2010 site and will be attended by 36 graduates and students nearing graduation in Engineering and Architecture faculties.
Students and teachers are coming from IUSS, the University of Pavia, the Tongji University in Shanghai, the University College of London, the Southeast University of China, the Sungkyunkwan University of Corea, and from the University of Oslo.

This seminar combines different cultural experiences and methodologies in the fields of urban transformation, the relation between existing settlements and developing ones, and the functional and architectural renewal of urban areas and historical buildings. The theme of urban and landscape renewal involves aspects of urban composition, architectural expression and local identity, and it is of primary importance in contemporary cities characterised by great productive, social, and therefore territorial, changes.

]]>For the academic year 2010-2011, the Centre for Studies and Research on Ancient Law, CEDANT, a part of IUSS, has organzied the ninth "Collegium of Roman Law", an intensive and residential course of study.

The Collegium proposes as theme "Interpreting Justinian's Digest. History and methods", under the direction of Dario Mantovani (University of Pavia) and Antonio Padoa Schioppa (University of Milan).

The Collegium will be held at Almo Collegio Borromeo from 10^thto 28^th of January 2010 and is consists of lectures presented by university professors to 15 Italian or foreign junior researchers interested in the proposed theme.

]]>The Center for Postgraduate Education and Research on “Languages of Europe: Typology, History and Sociolinguistics” (LETiSS) at IUSS is going to organize an International Spring School under the title "Europe beyond Europe: new horizons pn pidgins and creoles".

The Spring School will be held from Monday 18 until Friday 22 April 2011 at IUSS (Institute for Advanced Study) - Viale Lungo Ticino Sforza 56, Pavia and it is targeted at 20 advances students in linguistics and related fields, selected by the Scientific Commitee.

The aim of the school is to enhance dialogue among young linguists interested in the topics announced in the title, under the guide of leading specialists. This is why the number of participants has been limited (see below), in order to facilitate interactions among them.

The residential course of study "Collegium of Roman Law" organized by CEDANT (Centre for Studies and Research on Roman Law at IUSS) will be held from 10th to 28th of January 2011 at Almo Collegio Borromeo in Pavia.

For the academic year 2010-2011 the proposed theme is "Interpreting Justinian's Digest. History and methods" under the direction of Dario Mantovani (University of Pavia) and Antonio Padoa Schioppa (University of Milan).

The "Collegium" consists of three weeks of lectures presented by university professors to young researchers previously selected and interested in the theme. The seminars are structured to encourage scholarly exchange and discussion too. At the same time, each participant is invited to contribute actively to the development and pursuit of research.

]]>The European Centre for law, science and new technologies (ECLT) at the University of Pavia, IUSS (Institute for Advances Studies), Collegio Ghislieri and Fondazione Maugeri organize the "2011 Law & Sceince Young Scholars Informal Symposium".
The Symposium aims to create a forum for post-graduate scholars, PHD students and early-career researchers working in the area of Law&Science (in special cases applications from final-year undergraduate students can be considered). It will provide participants with an opportunity to present and discuss their research with senior researchers of the Law Science community in a constructive and friendly atmosphere.

The two best papers will be awarded a Fondazione Maugeri Prize and
2011 Law&Science Young Scholar.

It will be held at the university of Pavia on the 10^th of June 2011.

It aims to provide higher-level education in the field of earthquake engineering and seismology. The syllabus offers a comprehensive set of subjects covering applied mechanics, structural engineering, earthquake engineering, engineering seismology and soil dynamics, with emphasis on both theoretical background and design considerations.

It is required a University Degree or past professional experience in civil/environmental engineering, geology, geophysics, physics, applied mathematics.
An adequate command of the English language is required.

The new Masters Programme in Risk and Emergency Management (REM) will aim to train graduates and professionals in the assessment, mitigation and management of extreme events (both before and after they occur), with a particular focus on those arising from natural hazards though some aspects of human-made, technological and biomedical risk will also be covered.

The unique characteristics of the programme include the broad, interdisciplinary curriculum that includes topics of statistics and probability, law, economics, resource management, natural hazards and risk, finance, insurance, sociology, communication, psychology, public health and medicine.

]]>As a part of the Centre for Post-Graduate Training and Research in Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology programme (internationally known as ROSE School), an International Seminar is organised every year, to provide the students with an opportunity to present and discuss their research work to an audience of international experts.

In addition to standard presentations on research work carried out at the Centre, the annual Seminars feature also the tradition of inviting a prominent scientist to deliver a keynote lecture on a given contemporary and highly relevant topic in the field of Earthquake Engineering.
At this year’s event, such keynote address will be delivered Professor Paolo Emilio Pinto, University of Rome “La Sapienza“, with the title “Probabilistic Seismic Assessment of Buildings in Practice”.

The Seminar coincides also with the main Graduation and Diploma Award Ceremony of the ROSE School and the Award of ROSE Prize 2011.

The cooperative effort between IUSS, University of Pavia, CISP, COOPI, and VIS, supported by the contribution of the General Directorate for Cooperation and Development - Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has made it possible to offer this important post-graduate training course.

1st deadline for applications: 15th June 2011 (recommended to foreign cadidates).

In the past decades Structural Equation Models (SEM) continue to represent an area of intense research for statisticians, as well as psychometricians, econometricians and sociologists for analysis and interpretation of complex system data. SEM amalgamate regression analysis, path analysis and factor analysis, allowing for more richly detailed statistical models to be specified and compared to data than by using these techniques individually. This course is a five day workshop on structural equation modelling (SEM) using sem package of R. On each day, the initial (14.15-45) session consists of lectures, and the next (15-.15-18) session is a computer lab where the topics of the initial session are applied on example data

The Summit of Washington brings together leaders from the research, policy and re/insurance communities with expertise in various aspects of extreme events.

]]>For the academic year 2011-2012, the Centre for Studies and Research on Ancient Law, CEDANT, a part of IUSS, has organzied the tenth "Collegium of Roman Law", an intensive and residential course of study.

The Collegium proposes as theme "The Roman princeps: autocrat or magistrate? Legal factors and social factors of imperial power from August to Commodus", under the direction of Jean-Louis Ferrary (École Pratique des Hautes Études, Paris) and John Scheid (Collège de FRance, Paris).

The Collegium will be held at Almo Collegio Borromeo from 9th to 27th of January 2012 and it consists of lectures presented by university professors to 15 Italian or foreign junior researchers interested in the proposed theme.

Application for admission in Italian or English should be received by October 21st, 2011.

Guest Speaker: Carlos A. Primo Braga, Special Representative and Director, External Affairs, Europe, The World Bank.

"The current global economic outlook is characterized by a combination of good and bad news. Over the last few months, commodity prices increase has moderated, the Japanese recovery (after the natural disasters in March 2011) is proceeding well, and emerging markets growth remains strong. But the Eurozone financial strains have increased and underlying growth momentum in industrialized countries is significantly weaker than 6 months ago. Moreover, even though developing countries fundamentals remain strong, the danger of financial contagion is increasing and their capacity to pursue counter-cyclical policies has been affected. The presentation will discuss to what extent developing countries will be able to continue to display robust growth in view of the growing macro challenges faced by industrialized countries".

The Seminar will be in English.

The course is organized within the cooperation program signed by IUSS and Collège de France.

Riccardo BOCCO is Professor of Political Sociology at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva. His main research interest is on the role of international aid organisations and the impact of their humanitarian and development programs. He has been the director of CERMOC (Centre d’études et de recherches sur le Moyen-Orient contemporain), the French Social Sciences Research Institute based in Amman (Jordan) and then Research Director of the Graduate Institute of Development Studies (IUED, Geneva). He taught at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (Paris) and at the University of Bologna (Italy). From 2000, Riccardo Bocco has been heading a team (funded by several UN agencies) that has monitored the evolution of the socio-economic conditions of the civilian population in the Occupied Palestinian Territories. From 2004 to 2007 he was heading a joint research project with UNRWA on the Palestinian refugees in the Near East. In 2008, Riccardo Bocco co-founded the Centre on Conflict, Development and Peace at the Graduate Institute. His research currently focuses on peace-building and reconciliation policies in the Middle East. Riccardo Bocco received his PhD from the Institut d’Etudes Politiques of Paris.

]]>The residential course of study "Collegium of Roman Law" organized by CEDANT (Centre for Studies and Research on Roman Law at IUSS) will be held from 9th to 27th of January 2012 at Almo Collegio Borromeo in Pavia.

Program

The main objective of this course is to provide engineers who use computer codes, graduate students, and researchers with an extensive review of advanced numerical techniques and solution algorithms for nonlinear mechanics. It presents the current state-of-the-art in finite element modeling of nonlinear problems in solid and structural mechanics and illustrates difficulties (and possible solutions) which appear in a number of applications.

Location: the course will be held at the Conference Room of IMATI - CNR (Institute of Applied Mathematics and Information Technologies), in Via Ferrata 1, Pavia.

Early registration is kindly recommended and payment should be sent before January 31^st, 2012.

]]>The Human Development and Capability International Research Centre (HDC-IRC) is organising a one-day seminar in which objectives, methodologies and results of the first year of study of a two-year research project on the concepts of quality of life and sustainable human development in affluent societies will be presented by the research group.

The basic features and assumptions of a dynamic model based on the capability approach for assessing multidimensional well-being and simulating public policies will be presented and discussed at a roundtable with representatives of important public and private institutions. With the help of the research, the group intends to suggest public policy initiatives aimed at the promotion and development of the quality of live in an affluent social and economic context.

The research activities and the seminar are financially supported by the Fondazione Lombardia per l’Ambiente.

An intensive workshop will be taking place on the 21-22 January 2007 at the University of Jordan in Amman formally starting off the collaboration between Italian and Jordan universities regarding a joint research project, which aims at investigating theoretical foundations, measurement issues and policy implications with respect to human rights and human development.

Presentations will be given by Italian and Jordanian scholars from various disciplines regarding commonalities and differences between the human rights and human development approaches in order to discuss and clarify their respective compatibility and complementarity.

The various partners involved in this project are the Human Development, Capability and Poverty International Research Centre (HDCP-IRC) at IUSS, the University of Pavia, the Interdepartmental Centre on Human Rights and the Rights of Peoples at the University of Padua and the University of Jordan.

]]>In the programme of the Master in Methods for Management of Complex Systems are organized seminars, compulsory for the Master Students, but optional for University of Pavia students, and opened to everyone is interested in the argument.

ABSTRACT

Current technical scenarios are complex and characterized by huge volume of data and heterogeneous data sources. To understand such scenarios and to support decisions, computer tools are indispensable. The volume of data and the multiplicity of data sources, like sensors, product databases, and text archives, and diversity of context, require advanced techniques of data integration and analysis. Thereby, interactive visual methods play a central role to support user decision processes since only interactive visual presentations are able to transfer necessary information in an effective and efficient way and allow real-time decisions of human users.

Computer-supported visual analytics poses several challenges to software design and human-computer interaction. In fact, this is a new research area, and several research groups at prime institutions worldwide are established to focus on this concern. A major prerequisite for visual analytics is information integration and fusion. Complex scenarios have to integrate several information sources. These sources range from sensor data, structured databases, multimedia data to text collections. Based on this, dedicated analysis tools have to condense and summarise the information to reach an abstraction level adequate for the decision at hand. This extracted information has to be presented in an intuitive way allowing direct manipulation and switching between different levels of abstraction.

Moreover, due to the fact that in technical scenarios the context is changing frequently, this analysis process has to be adaptive. The context change might refer to hanging of data sources, of users, of the objective of
analysis and visualization, and output devices. The adaptation should be semi-automatically requiring minimal human intervention.

The core areas focus on realizing efficiently the basic functionalities of the analysis cycle and designing the framework. To those belong: (a) information acquisition ranging from sensor data to information integration of web data, and (b) visual analytics covering the combination of data mining and analysis techniques with information fusion, visualization and interaction.

Application scenarios give the necessary feedback to develop and evaluate the framework. The application scenarios automation and virtual engineering, driving assistance systems, and medical applications are based on existing successful cooperation between computer science, engineering, and medical institutes. These application areas share sufficient common ground to facilitate the development and evaluation of the framework, and provide sufficient diversity to challenge the proposed goals.
