Curriculum vitæ

Andrea Carlo Moro (1962) is full professor of General linguistics at the Scuola Universitaria Superiore IUSS - Pavia, (Italy) where he has founded the Research Center for Neurolinguistics and Theoretical Syntax (NEtS) which directed for six years. He is also Deputy Rector of IUSS, Head of the Cognitive Behavioral and Social Sciences Department and Director of the Ph.D. joint program in Cognitive Neuro­science with UniSR. In 1993 he was among the founders of the Department of Cognitive Sciences at the Istituto Scientifico H San Raffaele in Milan where he became head of the inter­faculty program in cognitive neuro­sciences after the establishment of the San Raffaele University in 1996 which he contributed to found.

He graduated in Pavia in classical literature, obtained a Ph.D. in Linguistics at the University of Padua and a Diplôme d'Études Supérieures (DES) in “Théorie de la Syntaxe et Syntaxe Comparative” at the Université de Genève in 1993; he started visiting MIT as a Fulbright student in 1988 and has since then been appointed "visiting scientist" at the Dept. of Linguistics and Philosophy for several years. He was also appointed "visting scholar" at Harvard University at the Dept. of Linguistics in 2006 and 2007. He lectured in many universities, including the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa, the Collège de France, the University of Cambridge, NYU, the École Normale Supérieure in Paris and the Max Planck Institute in Leipzig.

His main fields of research are the theory of syntax and the relation between syntax and the brain (neurolinguistics). Among his contributions are the discovery of inverse copular sentences, the principle of Dynamic Antisymmetry, the neurobiological correlation of "possible" vs. "impossible languages", the effect of negation on premotor cortex activity and the electrophysiological representation of inner speech. He has published many papers in international Journals such as Nature Neuroscience, The Proceedings of the National Academy of Science (PNAS), Trends in Cognitive Science and Linguistic Inquiry. He has also published a few books: The raising of predicates (Cambridge University Press, 1997) Dynamic Antisymmetry (The MIT press, 2000), The Boundaries of Babel. The brain and the Enigma of Impossible Languages (The MIT Press, 2015 II ed.), Breve storia del verbo "essere" (Adelphi, 2010; English translation.
