Models used for the estimation of site response and for capturing site effects in ground motion prediction equations assume that linear amplification factors are independent of the earthquake scenario in consideration.
We present empirical and numerical evidence that for soft sites and low magnitudes, site amplification functions in the response spectral domain have a strong magnitude- and distance-dependence. We present evidence from the KiK-net array to show that the scenario dependence is also observed in site terms of a ground motion prediction equation. Finally, we review the implications of these observations for seismic hazard analysis studies and for the development of ground motion prediction equations.
