The Role of Soft Computing in Intelligent Data Analysis

All'interno del Programma Didattico del Master in "Metodi per la Gestione di Sistemi Complessi" (Master MCS) dello IUSS, sono inseriti seminari aperti al pubblico.

Il secondo seminario dell'Edizione 2007-2008 del Master MCS sarà tenuto dal Prof. Rudolf Kruse, Professore di Informatica presso la Fakultät für Informatik Otto-von-Guericke-Universität Magdeburg.
Il Prof. Kruse è uno dei docenti del corso di "Soft Computing" del Master MCS (cui ha partecipato anche nelle scorse edizioni).

"The Role of Soft Computing in Intelligent Data Analysis"

Current technical scenarios are complex and characterized by huge volume of data and heterogeneous data sources. To understand such scenarios and to support decisions, computer tools are indispensable. The volume of data and the multiplicity of data sources, like sensors, product databases, and text archives, and diversity of context, require advanced techniques of data integration and analysis. Thereby, interactive visual methods play a central role to support user decision processes since only interactive visual presentations are able to transfer necessary information in an effective and efficient way and allow real-time decisions of human users.
 
Computer-supported visual analytics poses several challenges to software design and human-computer interaction. In fact, this is a new research area, and several research groups at prime institutions worldwide are established to focus on this concern. A major prerequisite for visual analytics is information integration and fusion. Complex scenarios have to integrate several information sources. These sources range from sensor data, structured databases, multimedia data to text collections. Based on this, dedicated analysis tools have to condense and summarise the information to reach an abstraction level adequate for the decision at hand. This extracted information has to be presented in an intuitive way allowing direct manipulation and switching between different levels of abstraction.

Moreover, due to the fact that in technical scenarios the context is changing frequently, this analysis process has to be adaptive. The context change might refer to hanging of data sources, of users, of the objective of
analysis and visualization, and output devices. The adaptation should be semi-automatically requiring minimal human intervention. 

The core areas focus on realizing efficiently the basic functionalities of the analysis cycle and designing the framework. To those belong: (a) information acquisition ranging from sensor data to information integration of web data, and (b) visual analytics covering the combination of data mining and analysis techniques with information fusion, visualization and interaction.
 
Application scenarios give the necessary feedback to develop and evaluate the framework. The application scenarios automation and virtual engineering, driving assistance systems, and medical applications are based on existing successful cooperation between computer science, engineering, and medical institutes. These application areas share sufficient common ground to facilitate the development and evaluation of the framework, and provide sufficient diversity to challenge the proposed goals.
