Biografia

Carmine Galasso, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Catastrophe Risk Engineering in the University College London (UCL)'s Department of Civil, Environmental & Geomatic Engineering (CEGE), UK, and an Associate Professor of Structural Engineering at the Scuola Universitaria Superiore (IUSS) Pavia, Italy, in the Centro di Formazione e Ricerca per la Mitigazione del Rischio Sismico (ROSE). Prior to joining UCL in 2014 as an Assistant Professor (Lecturer), Carmine worked as a Catastrophe Risk Modeler at Applied Insurance Research (AIR) Worldwide, San Francisco, USA; and as a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Performance-based Earthquake Engineering Laboratory, at the University of California, Irvine, USA. He earned his PhD in Earthquake Risk at the Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II, Italy, in January 2011.

His research focuses on the development and application of probabilistic and statistical methods and tools for catastrophe risk modelling and disaster risk reduction. He investigates risks to building portfolios and infrastructure exposed to multiple natural hazards, including earthquakes, strong winds, and flooding, with special emphasis on developing countries. The ultimate goal is to provide society with a sustainable, safe, and resilient built environment.
 
Carmine has authored >150 peer-reviewed publications (i.e., including 40 published/accepted ISI
journal papers and >100 conference papers). He is an Associate/Guest Editor for three International Journals and Referee for over 20. He is/has been PI on a number of grants totalling €1.5M (in the last two years); his research is funded by the UK Research Councils, the European Commission, the British Council, the Chinese International Centre for Collaborative Research on Disaster Risk Reduction (ICCR-DRR), the China Scholarship Council (CSC), the (Mexican) Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (CONACYT), the World Bank and its Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR), the Motorola Solution Foundation, and the Willis Research Network. Carmine is a co-I of the newly funded £19.6 million Global Challenges Research Fund Urban Disaster Risk Hub.

Carmine has delivered >20 invited talks/keynotes at academic institutions/companies in the UK, USA, Germany, Italy, China, Indonesia, Philippines, and Peru.
