Project name: Severe Uncertainty: Decisions, Evidence and Probability

Project acronym: DeEP

Principal Investigator: Dott. Luca Zanetti

DescriptionThis project aims to make concrete progress in understanding severe uncertainty by integrating philosophy and engineering. This approach is revolutionary because it can not only inform but also reshape long-standing and current issues in philosophy of science, epistemology, and decision theory, as they relate to mathematical modeling, scientific disagreement, and the use of experts in public decision-making.

The main objectives of this project are:

1. To advance our understanding of severe uncertainty in forecasting rare and extreme events.

2. To contribute to the formulation of strategies for addressing severe uncertainty in science-based policy, including the use of model ensembles to quantify natural hazards.

3. To promote a "human-scale modeling" approach to risk analysis that integrates philosophical expertise into the evaluation of scientific models.
