A recognition of the highest prestige for the linguist and full professor at the Scuola Universitaria Superiore IUSS Pavia and the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa.

Professor Andrea Moro has been appointed Corresponding Member of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei, receiving the official emblem and title during the opening ceremony of the 2025–2026 academic year, held on 14 November 2025 at the Academy’s headquarters in Rome. Elected to the Class of Moral, Historical and Philological Sciences (Category I – Philology and Linguistics), Professor Moro has received what is considered the highest academic honour in Italy—an acknowledgment bestowed upon scholars who have distinguished themselves through contributions of exceptional significance in their respective fields. The appointment recognises Moro’s outstanding scientific and cultural contribution to theoretical linguistics and neurolinguistics, with particular emphasis on the study of syntax and the neurobiological correlates of human language. Through an extensive body of internationally acclaimed research and essays, as well as literary works translated into several languages, Moro has played a decisive role in fostering dialogue between linguistics and neuroscience, helping to elucidate the cognitive mechanisms that make human language possible and promoting scientific culture both in Italy and internationally.

“This extraordinary recognition fills us with deep pride, joy and gratitude,” stated Professor Mario Martina, Rector of the Scuola Universitaria Superiore IUSS Pavia. “Professor Andrea Moro is not only one of the most internationally renowned and prolific linguists, but also a central figure in the academic development and institutional identity of our School. The entire IUSS community shares in the joy and appreciation for his exceptional contribution and for this prestigious honour, which reflects not only on him as a scholar, but on our institution as a whole.”

Andrea Moro is Full Professor of General Linguistics at the Scuola Universitaria Superiore IUSS Pavia and the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa; he served as Deputy Rector of IUSS for two terms (2012–2025) and as Vice President of the Committee of Experts for Research Policy (CEPR), appointed by the Prime Minister. In 2025 he was awarded the title of Commendatore of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic by President Sergio Mattarella. He founded and directed the Department of Cognitive Sciences at the Vita-Salute San Raffaele University in Milan and the NEtS Research Centre for Neuroscience, Epistemology and Theoretical Syntax. He is also a member of the Pontifical Academy of Fine Arts and Letters and of the Academia Europaea. In addition to his extensive scientific and outreach publications, translated into multiple languages, he is the author of two novels—Il segreto di Pietramala (Flaiano Prize 2018) and Cinquantun giorni (2024)—which weave together language, mystery, and philosophical reflection.
