It is still possible to apply for the VIU Winter School “Digital Rights: Theory and Practice”, taking place 26–30 January 2026 at Venice International University (VIU), on San Servolo Island (Venice, Italy).

Organized by VIU, with IUSS Pavia as a partner, the Winter School offers an intensive one-week interdisciplinary programme focusing on the emerging challenges and transformations connected to digital rights, at the intersection of law, technology and society. The programme combines theoretical perspectives with practice-oriented activities, including lectures, workshops and case-based discussions.

Main topics include

  • the impact of information technologies on fundamental rights
  • data protection and information security
  • AI and public decision-making
  • law and ethics of AI
  • the right to digital memory and the right to be forgotten
  • data governance and regulation
  • digital platforms and democratic societies
  • digital labour and digital citizenship
  • the societal impact of big data

Who is it for?

Applications are open to:

  • Master’s Degree students interested in pursuing doctoral studies
  • PhD students in Law, Human Rights, International Relations, Political Science, Philosophy and Sociology

Credits and certification

  • Certificate of attendance
  • 2 ECTS credits
  • maximum 25 participants

Fees

  • students of VIU member universities: € 400 (VAT included)
  • students of other universities: € 800 (VAT included)
    Fees cover tuition, course materials, lunches at the VIU cafeteria and social events.

Accommodation on campus (shared rooms) is available upon request.
