Innovation and the future of precision medicine

On 13 February 2026, at the headquarters of the National Research Council (CNR), in the G. Marconi Library Hall, the presentation event of the National PhD Programme in Science and Technology for Advanced Therapies (STAT) will take place. The PhD programme is promoted by the IUSS Pavia – University School for Advanced Studies, in collaboration with Fondazione Telethon, the University of Pavia, and Fondazione CNAO. The event, lasting approximately two hours and starting at 11:00 a.m., is addressed to the academic and research community as well as to institutional, scientific and industrial stakeholders interested in contributing to the development of the PhD programme.

The National PhD Programme STAT is supported by the Italian Ministry of University and Research (MUR) and is based on a structured network of universities, research institutions and national and international partners, ensuring a high-quality scientific and technological training environment.

The Training Programme and Curricula

The PhD-STAT offers a multidisciplinary and flexible training programme, structured into three curricula, designed to address the major scientific and technological challenges in the field of advanced therapies:

Hadron Therapy and Advanced Biophysical Therapies

This curriculum focuses on advanced physical technologies applied to medicine, with particular emphasis on hadron therapy and next-generation non-pharmacological therapies. Students will acquire expertise in the design of innovative therapeutic devices, biomedical engineering, and risk analysis related to biomedical technologies.

Gene and Cell Therapies

This curriculum is dedicated to the design, development and clinical application of innovative gene- and cell-based therapies. It provides advanced training in genetics, molecular biology and precision medicine, with a focus on state-of-the-art genetic manipulation techniques.

Biomolecular and Biotechnological Sciences

This curriculum integrates key disciplines such as structural biology, bioinorganic and pharmaceutical chemistry, biocatalysis, molecular microbiology, neuropharmacology and molecular haematology. It is strongly oriented towards experimental laboratory research and the development of innovative methodologies for human health.

All curricula are designed to train researchers capable of operating in highly interdisciplinary contexts, fostering a shared scientific language across medicine, biology, engineering, physics and social sciences, including economics, law and ethics of technology. The programme adopts an integrated approach combining basic research, technological development and clinical application.
