Training the Mind: Metaphors as a Gym for the Brain
Why do we say the brain is a computer, that ideas germinate, or that deforestation is a razor? We tend to think of metaphors as elegant rhetorical devices — the language of poetry and music. Yet metaphors are far more than that. They are cognitive tools the human mind relies on to grasp complex concepts and communicate more effectively.
Across two interactive webinars — featuring exercises and guided activities — we will explore the relationship between metaphors and the brain, and the power of figurative language as a means of maintaining cognitive and communicative abilities throughout life.
We will also examine the special bond between metaphors and the environment: tracing the language of nature and climate change, and discovering how metaphors can shape — and deepen — our capacity to think "green."
Both sessions are part of the #FindTheMetaphor campaign, which uses the recognition of everyday metaphors as a tool to stimulate critical thinking and raise awareness of the role figurative language plays in how we understand the world.
#FindTheMetaphor is promoted by the Scuola Universitaria Superiore IUSS of Pavia as part of the European Research Council-funded project PROMENADE. 🔗 ERC Project page
