Online Workshop - Large Language METAPHORS: New Trends in Computational Approaches to Metaphorical Expressions
5th March 2026, h. 9.30 AM - 1.00 PM
This workshop will explore new trends in the interplay between metaphor research and Large Language Models (LLMs). Metaphors offer a privileged lens for understanding how language is interpreted and how human experience is conceptualized and communicated, yet their complexity has long challenged natural language processing. Recent progress in LLMs, however, suggests that machines are becoming increasingly capable of processing figurative and implicit meanings.
The workshop will examine how state-of-the-art automatic modeling techniques can be used to detect, interpret, map, and rate metaphors across languages and align them with human data, as well as how metaphors can be leveraged to probe and assess the linguistic capabilities of LLMs.
The event is organized by the Neurolinguistics and Experimental Pragmatics Lab at IUSS and is supported by the ERC project “PROcessing MEtaphors: Neurochronometry, Acquisition and DEcay” (PROMENADE).
