IUSS – the University School for Advanced Studies of Pavia – played a prominent role at the ASviS Future Day, held on 2 December at the Ara Pacis Auditorium in Rome. The event focused on building desirable futures and on the need for a profound cultural shift towards long-term thinking in public debate and policymaking.

During the panel on futures literacy, Professor Riccardo Pietrabissa from IUSS participated as co-author of the new ASviS Future Paper “Promoting Futures Literacy”, developed together with Roberto Poli, President of the Italian Foundation for Futures Studies. The paper highlights a critical gap in contemporary societies: while we are highly effective at identifying future risks, we remain less capable of envisioning positive and desirable long-term scenarios, pointing to the need for structured and responsible educational pathways.

A key contribution to the event was also provided by Enrico Giovannini, Scientific Director of ASviS and member of the Consiglio di Sorveglianza IUSS School  who emphasised the urgency of moving beyond short-term political and cultural perspectives. His presence further strengthens the strategic link between IUSS and ASviS in promoting a future-oriented culture grounded in research, knowledge and sustainability.

IUSS’s approach, rooted in interdisciplinary research, academic excellence and international openness, is fully aligned with the UN 2030 Agenda and the Ecosistema Futuro initiative promoted by ASviS, helping to build strong connections between universities, schools, institutions and civil society.

Participation in the Future Day confirms IUSS Pavia’s role as a leading centre for futures studies and advanced education, actively contributing to public debate and to the innovation of educational and governance models.
