Luca Zanetti, a tenure-track researcher in logic and philosophy of science at the University School for Advanced Studies IUSS Pavia and Principal Investigator of the FIS 2 project DeEP (https://www.iusspavia.it/en/research/research-funding/fis-2/deep), will be an invited speaker at two academic events in the United States in November 2026.

On 17 November, he will take part in a panel at the workshop “Observation, Theory, and Progress in Seismology”, hosted by the Seismo Lab at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in Pasadena. The workshop will bring together scholars in seismology and the history and philosophy of science to discuss the relationship between theory, observation, instrumentation, and progress in seismological research.

Zanetti will also speak at the symposium “Philosophical Foundations of Measuring Hazard”, organised by the Society for the Study of Measurement as part of the biennial meeting of the Philosophy of Science Association, to be held in San Diego from 19 to 22 November. The symposium will also feature Aja Watkins (University of Wisconsin-Madison), Miguel Ohnesorge (University of Toronto), and Shimin Zhao (University of Pittsburgh).

In his talk, Zanetti will address epistemological challenges in seismic hazard assessment, focusing on the role of expert judgement and the representation of uncertainty and scientific disagreement.
