Project name: Severe Uncertainty: Decisions, Evidence and Probability
Project acronym: DeEP
Principal Investigator: Dott. Luca Zanetti
Description: This project aims to make concrete progress in understanding severe uncertainty by integrating philosophy and engineering. This approach is revolutionary because it can not only inform but also reshape long-standing and current issues in philosophy of science, epistemology, and decision theory, as they relate to mathematical modeling, scientific disagreement, and the use of experts in public decision-making.
The main objectives of this project are:
1. To advance our understanding of severe uncertainty in forecasting rare and extreme events.
2. To contribute to the formulation of strategies for addressing severe uncertainty in science-based policy, including the use of model ensembles to quantify natural hazards.
3. To promote a "human-scale modeling" approach to risk analysis that integrates philosophical expertise into the evaluation of scientific models.
