Description: A sustainable strategy to reduce the seismic vulnerability of steel pallet racking is to increase the lifespan and service life of existing racking. This will help reduce the economic and environmental impact of new construction, but also avoid logistics downtime, which can cause significant direct and indirect economic losses (e.g., dismantling and replacement costs or downtime/interruption of operations, as well as worker disruptions).
The DESRACK project addresses this need by providing an innovative seismic-dissipative device that will be used to improve the seismic performance of existing racking. As is well known, the seismic behavior of racking is significantly influenced by the structural response of the beam-column and baseplate connections, which concentrate the material's nonlinearities and are responsible for the racking's ductility.
