Description: In philosophy, there is a long-running debate about the existence of a specific realm of things that can be perceived. Since perception seems to provide us with the most basic and immediate contact with our environment, the debate has important consequences for epistemology, the architecture of the mind, and even aesthetics and social cognition.

The primary goal of the HOPP project is to find metaphysically necessary and sufficient conditions for a property, particularly a higher-order property, to be perceptible. Achieving this goal will have not only theoretical but also empirical repercussions, demonstrating that HOPP can not only substantially redefine and improve the recent philosophical debate on perceptible properties, but also guide current cognitive science research on the empirical foundations of perceptual states.
