- Which requirements do I need in order to apply?
Eligible candidates must have the following academic qualifications (there are no citizenship requirements): a) Master’s degree;
b) Similar academic qualification obtained abroad and recognized by the Selection Board as comparable to an Italian master’s degree, in terms of duration of study and study content and deemed as providing eligibility for application to the course.
Applicants due to be awarded their master’s (or equivalent qualification) by 31 October 2021 may also apply.
- May I take part to the PhD Programme if I am a working student?
Admission to the PhD course implies a full-time commitment and no other type of employment is allowed. However, “Regulations for Doctoral Courses” art. 15 allows the student, while enrolled on the course, to occasionally work for other entities with strict limitations. Please refer to the Regulations for more details.
- Is there any age limit to apply?
No, there is no age limit to apply.
- May I apply if I am not an italian student?
Yes. There are no citizenship requirements.
- May I apply, even if I am not yet obtain the Master’s degree?
Yes. Applicants due to be awarded their master’s (or equivalent qualification) by 31 October 2021 may also apply.
- How many scholarships are available?
There are 105 fully founded scholarships available. Please check here to know more about each scholaship.
- How much is the schlarship amount?
The annual amount of the scholarship is €15,343.28, paid monthly at the end of each month.
- Is there any position without scholarship?
No, there is no available position without scholarship.
- Are all the scholarship theme-bound?
Yes, each scholarship is theme-bound, that is, there is a requirement for the recipient to focus his or her doctoral research on a specific topic and conduct his/her research activity at the host university offering the scholarship.
- Which documents are required in order to apply?
- Scan of a valid ID document;
- Currirulum Vitae;
- Proof of all university degree awards;
- Research Proposal focused on the research topic chosen as the first preference;
- Letter of Purpose.

- I have not obtained my Master’s degree yet; which documents do I need to upload?
For applicants awaiting award of their master’s degree: Proof of examinations taken and grades obtained.
- May I apply for two different curricula?
No. Applicant can choose just 1 curriculum.
- Can I modify my application once it has been submitted?
No, you can’t. Once you have been submitted your application you can not modify it anymore.
- Do I have to upload transcripts of both BSc and MSc?
Yes, you have to upload transcripts of each type of degree.
- Which kind of document do I have to upload as self-declaration?
Self-declaration is just for italian candidates.
- Does the Research Proposal need to focus on all the scholarships chosen?
No. The Research Proposal must focus on the first scholarship chosen.
- May I add images, charts or graphs to the Research Proposal?
Yes. The Research Proposal may include images, charts and graphs.
- Which kind of master’s degree do I need to have obtained in order to apply?
No specific master’s degree is required.
- Is there any preferred CV template?
No, there is no preferred CV template but the CV (max 2000 words) must include:
- Education qualifications and training path;
- research and/or work experience;
- list of publications;
- other relevant qualifications/documents that provide information on the applicant’s academic and professional experience.
- Do I need to attend all the classes/courses? – Is it compulsory attending classes?
The Ph.D. program includes a minimum number of 150 hours of classes, which each student must attend, taking exams where required.
