From a Milan vault to Pavia: masterpieces telling the story of the 1525 Battle of Pavia
After an international tour that reached the United States, the seven monumental Capodimonte tapestries are finally on their way to Pavia. Woven in wool, silk, gold and silver, they narrate with extraordinary detail the Battle of Pavia of 1525. Safeguarded in a vault in Milan, they will begin arriving at the Castle on September 8, with a staggered and ultra-secure delivery: together they are valued at more than 35 million euros.
From September 19, the east wing of the Visconti Castle will host the exhibition “Pavia 1525: the Arts of the Renaissance and the Battle Tapestries”, which for the first time in Italy brings together outside Capodimonte the entire cycle of these masterpieces.
Alongside the tapestries, the exhibition will present works from Pavia’s Civic Museums as well as prestigious loans from institutions such as the Royal Collection of Windsor and the Pinacoteca di Brera, offering visitors a journey through Renaissance Pavia and Lombardy.
Highlights include the Bottigella Altarpiece by Vincenzo Foppa, three panels by Donato de’ Bardi, and a previously unseen polyptych by Antonio Bergognone.
A special focus will be dedicated to cutting-edge technologies for art research and conservation: a video will showcase diagnostic analyses carried out by DeepTrace Technologies, a spin off of University School for advanced Studies IUSS Pavia, applying artificial intelligence to the study and preservation of cultural heritage.
Further scientific contributions were developed by the University of Milan and the Centro Conservazione e Restauro La Venaria Reale, with the support of Fondazione Bracco.
The exhibition will also feature a rediscovered treasure: the wooden choir of the former church of San Marino, recently restored by Luciano Gritti.
