The University School for Advanced Studies IUSS of Pavia is the Specialized University School, the only one in Lombardy, which aims to offer young people with particular talent innovative, multi-interdisciplinary and international paths, in an integrated vision whose unifying element is the centrality of the human being and the latter’s relationship with the physical and social world.
IUSS School is a public university institution which offers completely free courses and aims to achieve a condition of full free university studies for students, offering free places for collegiate residency with the contribution of the Colleges of Merit and EDISU.
Recognizing human capital as the main resource for the development of a country, IUSS University School aims to contribute to the full enhancement of talented young people, taking care of their research training and developing its own research programs for the advancement of knowledge, in both the scientific and humanistic fields.
The fields of study and research, articulated in the pre and post graduate courses, are oriented to distinctive identity themes of IUSS School and focus on the following areas in particular:
- cognitive neuroscience
- neurolinguistics and the philosophy of mind
- risk assessment, mitigation and reduction
- climate change and actions for sustainability
space investigation for the scientific exploitation of the nascent space economy and for the treatment of countless datasets.
In pursuing its aims, the IUSS School works in close synergy with all the components of the Pavia and Lombardy university system.
At the local level, IUSS School promotes collaboration with the University of Pavia, the University Colleges of Merit in Pavia and the Entity for the Right to University Study (EDiSU) and the related university colleges, contributing to consolidate and enhance the characteristic of the Pavia university as a particularly attractive study environment for brilliant young people from all over the country and for young people from abroad.
Since 2018, IUSS School has been federated with two other universities with a special system: the Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa and the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna of Pisa. Since 2022 the Federation has expanded to other special schools existing on the national territory: IMT of Lucca, SISSA of Trieste and Gran Sasso of L’Aquila.
Since 2022, IUSS School has also promoted collaboration with the University of Milan and the Colleges of Milan.
IUSS University School for Advanced Studies, more briefly IUSS, was born in 1997 with the signing of the Program Agreement with the Ministry of University and Scientific and Technological Research, within a unique system in the country which can boast the historical presence of the University of Pavia and the large university colleges. Faced with a wide and qualified activity carried out over the years, in the field of higher education and research, on 8 July 2005 the Minister of Education, University and Research signed the founding decree which recognizes the institution the University School for Advanced Studies of Pavia is published as a "Higher School with a special system", adding to the already existing Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa, Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna of Pisa, SISSA of Trieste.
