“Beyond the Images” (Oltre le immagini), a science communication project conceived by Federico Frau, a young researcher at the Neurolinguistics and Experimental Pragmatics Lab (NEPLab) of the IUSS School for Advanced Studies, has won first prize in the 7th edition of the Aldo Fasolo Prize for neuroscience communication. The award is promoted by the Neuroscience PhD Program of the University of Turin and the IntoBrain Association.
Using audiovisual storytelling, the project explores the linguistic and communicative challenges associated with psychosis from the perspective of those who experience them firsthand. It offers a direct and deeply human insight into a condition that is often misunderstood. The aim is to make complex neuroscience research accessible to the general public, fostering greater awareness and helping to reduce the stigma surrounding psychotic disorders.
The video was presented on June 3, 2026, during the CinemAmbiente Festival in Turin as part of the event “FI(na)LMENTE – Words and Images: Paths of Science Communication.” On that occasion, Federico Frau also presented the research activities carried out at NEPLab IUSS.
Following its success at the Aldo Fasolo Prize, the project received a further important international recognition: “Beyond the Images” has been selected for the Global Science Film Festival, scheduled for October 23–24, 2026, where it will be showcased alongside science communication productions from around the world.
This achievement highlights the importance of developing new forms of dialogue between research and society, valuing lived experiences as a tool for better understanding the phenomena studied by neuroscience and promoting scientific communication that is inclusive, rigorous, and capable of reaching diverse audiences.
