Biography
PhD candidate in THE HADRON ACADEMY: Risk and complexity in high tech medical innovation.
My name is Ethan Vorster. I am 27 years old. I am from Johannesburg in South Africa.
I did my undergraduate (Bachelor of Political Science) and masters (Master of Philosophy) at the University of Pretoria and Johannesburg respectively.
My research has continually focused on the philosophy of science and technology.
I have specialised in AI and machine learning as technological artifacts and their complex interactions with different industries, most notably, healthcare.
My masters focused on the line between tool and physician and weather or not AI will ever cross that line and what that would entail.
Additionally, I wrote and published a paper in my masters exploring the role of counterfactual reasoning in artificial consciousness. This paper was published in Artificial Intelligence Research (https://link.springer.com/chapter/10.1007/978-3-031-22321-1_26)
More recently, I have dedicated my research to more general and applied philosophy of science; focusing on notions of evidence, causation, risk, expertise and science communication.
My position in the Hadron academy has allowed me to apply these concepts in a concrete and applied case study (hadron therapy).
Hadron therapy has proven to be a fruitful area of research from a philosophical perspective and I hope to produce and publish actionable research that is of interest to relevant stakeholders.
The field of philosophy is evolving rapidly with the emergence of powerful new technologies such as AI, and I am excited to see what the future holds.
