ROSE Graduation year: 2005

Current position: Secretary General

Employer: Global Earthquake Model (GEM) Foundation

I arrived in Pavia during the first year of the ROSE School in 2001, and I immediately understood the unique opportunity I was being exposed to – the possibility to be taught by the best academics in Earthquake Engineering in the world. They were certainly not easy years, with a steep learning curve, but they taught me that the results and success I obtained were directly correlated with the hard work and dedication that I put into my studies and work.

ROSE Graduation year: 2009

Current position: Professor

Employer: Université catholique de Louvain (UCLouvain)

My PhD years at ROSE were a rich blend of cultural interactions with fellow students and experts from a wide range of international backgrounds. The convergence of such diverse experiences created a unique atmosphere and energy for intense study and research.
This time deeply shaped my path: it helped me understand that I would like to become a teacher, and it instilled the working habits and foundational knowledge that allowed me to embark on a more-or-less clumsy, yet rewarding, academic journey—which was followed by a postdoc at EPFL and continued over the past seven years as professor at UCLouvain.

Graduation year: 2008

Current position: Professor

Employer: EAFIT University, Medellín, Colombia

Being at ROSE allowed me to have an excellent education in earthquake engineering. The possibility of studying with the best professors in the world was unique and is something I treasure. Also, having classmates from all over the world enriched my studies, as it gave me the possibility to open my mind in several aspects. Some of the Professors and classmates at ROSE have been or are currently my colleagues. The connections I made from the time at ROSE are invaluable, a situation that I did not anticipate when applying to ROSE.

Graduation year: 2004

Current position: Current Global Seismic Skills Leader Associate Director

Employer: Arup

The ROSE school MSc and PhD provided an intense period of earthquake engineering training from a diverse group of instructors. I still routinely use (more than 20 years later) the technical training I received. I also have an international network from my time at ROSE, including people I didn’t actually overlap with in Pavia.
