"Neural models and linguistic competence"
30 May 2022, 16.30-18.00

Alessandro Lenci, University of Pisa
Introduced by: Valentina Bambini, IUSS

The latest generation neural models often have so sophisticated language skills that the same Turing test of the "Imitation Game" has lost diagnostic power to capture the distinction between human intelligence and artificial intelligence. This makes it even more important and complex to understand the true nature of language skills that can be acquired by neural systems that rely only on the statistical analysis of large quantities of linguistic input samples. In my seminar, I will address this topic by presenting two case studies designed to investigate the syntactic and semantic-pragmatic capabilities of neural models respectively. The results reveal a very articulated picture that, alongside significant similarities with human linguistic behavior, also shows important differences and limitations.
