"TOOLS AND METHODS IN THE SCIENCE OF INTEROCEPTION: ADVANCES AND CHALLENGES"
Speaker: Agustín Ibañez

Abstract: Theories of interoception are evolving rapidly, but there are still multiple methodological challenges. In this workshop, I will address different critical components of the theory and methods of interoception. First, I will discuss the most common measures of interoception and some innovations. This will include the standard heart rate detection tasks, as well as related approaches. Then, I will present other tasks, such as the interoceptive priming of emotions or the interoceptive measures of external stimuli. Next, I will discuss more recent methods to assess gastric interoception. Afterward, I will examine the connections between interoceptive signals and brain health and neuroscience, including the role of stress and environmental factors in visceral inflammation and gut imbalance. I will then present the allostatic-interoceptive predictive coding theories, focusing on the regulatory roles of the internal milieu necessary to predict environmental challenges. I will review how these frameworks are compromised in multiple neurodegenerative diseases, including behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD). Additionally, I will discuss multiple cardiovascular, metabolic, inflammatory, stress, and neurodegenerative biomarkers that index physiological imbalances triggered by allostatic processes.
