Molinini Daniele (University of Lisbon)
IUSS Visiting Scholar
Daniele Molinini will be visiting scholar at IUSS during the week of 16 December 2019; he participates in the activities of the eMath - Epistemology of Mathematics and Logic project, also carrying out the following seminars:
• 17.12, 14:00-16:00 - "Applications: examples from pre-Euclidean and post-Euclidean Mathematics";
• 19.12, 11:00-13:00 - "The Applicability of Mathematics: Philosophical Issues".
Daniele Molinini is FCT Researcher at the Centro de Filosofia das Ciências, University of Lisbon, where he works on the project "Disclosing the Role of Visual Reasoning and Mathematical Diagrams in Scientific Explanation". After a degree in physics at the University of Bologna, and a master’s degree in logic, philosophy, history and sociology of sciences at the University of Paris 7, he also obtained his PhD at the University, with a thesis in philosophy of mathematics ("Toward a Pluralist Approach to Mathematical Explanation of Physical Phenomena"; supervisor: Prof. M. Panza). Since then he has carried out research at several Italian and foreign centers, mainly interested in the philosophy of mathematics and science, and working in particular on the notion of explanation. Among his publications are:
• Molinini, D. (2014). What is a Mathematical Explanation. Rome: Carocci Editore.
