May 12 is the International Day of Women in Mathematics.The celebration occurs on the day of the birth of Maryam Mirzakhani, the first and only woman to receive the Fields Medal for Mathematics (2014), then died prematurely in 2017. In the motivation of the prestigious award are cited "her outstanding contributions to the dynamics and geometry of Riemann surfaces and their moduli spaces".

The Day of Celebration was established in 2018 at the proposal of the Women’s Committee of the Iranian Mathematical Society, an initiative adopted by the main international scientific societies in the area of Mathematics.

On May 12, 2019, a hundred events took place around the world, and this year, despite such special circumstances, PhD in Mathematics and PhD in Computational Mathematics and Decision Sciences of the University of Pavia promote a workshop to celebrate the day.

The students of these two PhDs are engaged in a series of self-managed online seminars entitled Se mi narri di matematica.

The Department of Mathematics and the Single Guarantee Committee of the University of Pavia are sponsors of the initiative.

The program includes a presentation of the figure of Maryam Mirzakhani by Lucia Gastaldi, professor of the University of Brescia, and the seminars of two PhD students, Irene Spelta and Ngoc Mai Monica Huynh.

The interventions will take place in Italian.
