HUMATH Workshop sulla Social and Applied Hinge Epistemology - June 10, 2026

The international workshop “Social and Applied Hinge Epistemology” will take place on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, starting at 11:00 AM, at the Scuola Universitaria Superiore IUSS Pavia, in the historic Palazzo Broletto (Room 1.17), as part of the HUMATH project.

The event will open with an introduction and initial remarks by Annalisa Coliva. At 11:15 AM, Anna Pederneschi (University of California, Irvine) will present “Notes on Social Hinge Epistemology: Hinges, Trust, and Distrust.”

At 12:15 PM, Ross Patrizio (University of Glasgow) will deliver a talk titled “Hinge Trust & AI,” focusing on the relationship between epistemic trust and artificial intelligence. The morning session will conclude with a lunch break at 1:00 PM.

The workshop will resume at 3:00 PM with a joint presentation by Alessio Tacca (IUSS Pavia) and Guido Tana (IFILNOVA Lisbon), “Hinges, Philosophical Disagreements, and Where not to Find Them.”

At 4:00 PM, Giorgio Volpe (University of Bologna) will present “Genealogical Debunking, Hinge Commitments, and Deep Disagreements: What’s the Relation?”

The day will conclude at 5:00 PM with final remarks by Annalisa Coliva and a roundtable discussion, followed by dinner at 7:30 PM.

Commentators include Maria Cristina Amoretti, Michel Croce (University of Genoa), Anna Ichino (University of Milan), Filippo Lanari (IUSS Pavia), and Tommaso Piazza (University of Pavia).

The workshop is organized by Silvia De Toffoli, Andrea Sereni, and Guido Tana, and supported by the FIS2 HUMATH project – Humanizing Mathematical Knowledge: Fallibility, Technology, Know-How (FIS-04053).
