The Mark of the Mental (MOM) Project

- “Foundations of Predictive Processing. I. Tenets and History”
- “Foundations of Predictive Processing. II. Content and Consciousness”
- “Foundations of Predictive Processing. III. Believing in PP”

Speaker: Matteo Colombo, Tilburg University

The goal of this cycle of lectures is to clarify the historical, philosophical and scientific foundation of Predictive Processing (PP). According to PP, the brain is a mechanism that uses statistical models of the environment to continuously generate predictions in the service of adaptive control. In the first lecture, I introduce the main tenets of PP, and situate them in their historical and scientific context.  In the second lecture, I discuss the bearing of PP on content and consciousness, considering whether PP must be committed to some form of internalism or representationalism about minds. In the third lecture, I put into focus whether and why we should believe PP is true, and conclude by examining what PP can plausibly contribute to the sciences of mind, brain and behaviour.
