"What philosophical questions does technique pose?"

4 November 2020, 14.30

Speaker:
Vera Tripodi - University of Turin
Abstract:
Why are technology and technology the object of ethics? Why an ethics of techniques?
We mostly have an ambivalent relationship with technology.
On the one hand, technology fascinates, intrigues, interests and even entertains us; it is what allows us to build our future and imagine new scenarios.
Technology opens up many possibilities and offers new hope. On the other hand, technology frightens us. Technological progress poses real risks and, most often, leads to a questioning of the human. My speech is divided into two parts. In the first part, I analyze the question of the alleged power of technology and offer a general look at what is and what is the ethics of technology (or technology).
In the second part, I examine the question of responsibility, with a careful look at what it means to be responsible for a technician. In particular, the focus will be on two case studies drawn from the ethics of engineering; to autonomous cars and the examination of which ethical setting is most suitable for the design of their software.
