As part of the Public Engagement initiatives of the IUSS Higher University School of Pavia, Thursday, December 5 at 18, Prof.ssa Giuliana Bendelli will hold a conference open to citizens entitled "Joyce’s Ulysses": a true celebration of everyday life with its exceptional banality and its ordinary intensity.
The common thought is that Odysseus by James Joyce represents a very complex work, a text of undeniable difficulty that can be addressed and commented only by specialists when it is a text that, celebrating in every line the art and taste of writing, claims to be democratically read by all.
Ulysses is but the story of an ordinary day of a normal man that the genius of Joyce has been able to make a symbol of universal man: a true celebration of everyday life with its exceptional banality and its ordinary intensity.
However, the reader, both to the cultured and to the common, must be provided with the necessary keys of reading, in literary, poetic, historical, scientific and cultural terms, bringing to light the ribs of the text, its composition, the patterns of plot and plot, symbolic and epic references, relations with other disciplines, both artistic and scientific. What results is the representation of a lively human and linguistic theatre that Joyce had conceived in a profoundly human and entertaining universal work that everyone has the right, even before the duty, to know.

GIULIANA BENDELLI teaches English literature at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Milan. He deals with contemporary literature with a specific interest in the work of Conrad and Joyce. With Vita e Pensiero he has published three monographs: The Vigil of Joyce (2012), Joseph Conrad: the figure of the sea (2012) and Joyce’s Read the Odysseus (2017).
He has written essays on various authors, published in Italian and foreign magazines and volumes. The most recent on the Italian reception of Ezra Pound. 
He holds a Master of Philosophy in Anglo-Irish Literature from Trinity College Dublin under the guidance of Terence Brown and Brendan Kennelly. He translated two novels, La Croce Storta (2001) and I Fiorentini (2003), the English reissue published in 2012 (A&A Farmar, Dublin) and translated a collection of poems: Brendan Kennelly: The Essential (Jaca Book, 2017). 
She is the editor and author of a volume of essays entitled Ireland’s Cultural Empire: Contacts, Comparisons, Translations (Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2018). 
He edited the edition of Pericles, Prince of Tyre by William Shakespeare. The volume, which contains the unpublished translation by Roberto Sanesi with text opposite (Lemma Press Edizioni, Bergamo March 2019). He translated three stories by Lewis Carroll published (for the first time in Italian) into a volume edited by him: Il Campanile di Oxford, (Lemma Press Edizioni, Bergamo August 2019).
He also edited and translated a volume of moral and religious writings by Robert Louis Stevenson for the publishing house Vita e Pensiero (Milan, November 2019).
The new edition of the English scientific text English from Science, MondadoriUniversity (Milan 2010) is in preparation.
