The project on the philosophy of proving practices will be carried out at the Scuola Universitaria Superiore IUSS Pavia with the support of Fondazione Cariplo.

Dr Fabio De Martin Polo, a researcher in Logic and Philosophy of Mathematics at the Czech Academy of Sciences in Prague, has been selected as a winner of Fondazione Cariplo’s “Young Researchers 2025” Call. With the funding awarded by Fondazione Cariplo, he will carry out his research project at the Scuola Universitaria Superiore IUSS Pavia.

The project, entitled “The Philosophy of Proving Practices: The Practical and Social Turn in the Epistemology of Proofs and Proving Activities”, aims to broaden the traditional perspective of the philosophy of proof by focusing not only on the nature of proofs themselves, but also on the practices, methods and contexts in which they are developed, shared and used.

The goal is to move from a “philosophy of proof” towards a broader “philosophy of proving practices”, extending the focus from the formal dimension of logic to the concrete ways in which reasoning and proofs are constructed, communicated and understood.

The research will also explore logic education, comparing different methods of proof and their explanatory value in educational settings. Particular attention will be devoted to logical puzzles and visual thinking, with the aim of exploring new approaches to understanding and teaching logical reasoning.
