At MADE expo 2025, Professor Gian Michele Calvi (IUSS – Scuola Universitaria Superiore Pavia, Studio Calvi Beam, Eucentre Foundation) presented the seismic reconstruction strategy for Arquata del Tronto, one of the most challenging post-earthquake interventions in Italy.
The project builds on detailed topographic surveys and 3D terrain modelling, leading to advanced design solutions featuring:
- permanent pass-through active anchors,
- integrated service ducts,
- soil–structure interaction (SSI) modelling,
- spectrum-compatible accelerograms,
- 3D numerical simulations to estimate the seismic demand on the anchoring system.
This case study highlights the complexity of rebuilding an entire mountain settlement destroyed by the 2016 earthquake and showcases innovative structural configurations, including isolated base plates, reinforced walls and integrated duct systems.
We also invite you to follow IUSS participation in the session “Building the Future: Sustainability, Seismic Safety and Off-Site Innovation”, scheduled for Friday, November 21st.
