The international dimension of IUSS research is further reflected in the experience of Micol Rotta, a student at the IUSS School for Advanced Studies in Pavia, who spent two months at CodeX – The Stanford Center for Legal Informatics at Stanford University as a Visiting Student Researcher.
This experience is part of a long-standing scientific collaboration between IUSS and Stanford, developed through the International Center on Law, Science and New Technologies (ICLT), directed by Professor Amedeo Santosuosso, who supported and supervised the student's research path and facilitated her stay at CodeX.
Through the International Center on Law, Science and New Technologies (ICLT), IUSS is affiliated with CodeX's Insurance Initiative and carries out joint research activities on artificial intelligence, automated decision-making processes, and computational law.
Within this interdisciplinary environment, which brings together legal scholars, computer scientists, and researchers from around the world, Micol developed her thesis research on the legal qualification of AI agents. Her work focused on one of the most debated issues in the international landscape: whether emerging AI technologies require a dedicated regulatory framework or can be effectively governed through the adaptation of existing legal instruments.
Particular attention was devoted to the issue of liability for chatbots and autonomous AI systems, an area that raises unprecedented questions compared with traditional models of legal responsibility.
"My experience at CodeX allowed me to deepen my research at one of the world's leading centers dedicated to the relationship between law and artificial intelligence. Beyond the academic work, I had the opportunity to engage with an exceptionally vibrant international environment and to attend a speech by Roberta Metsola, a particularly valuable occasion to reflect on the challenges posed by technological innovation," said Micol Rotta, a student at the IUSS School for Advanced Studies in Pavia.
Founded through the collaboration between Stanford Law School and the computer science community, CodeX is now one of the world's leading research centers dedicated to the intersection of law, digital technologies, and artificial intelligence. Its activities range from the automation of legal processes and computable contracts to the development of innovative tools for regulating emerging technologies.
Beyond the academic dimension, the stay at Stanford also provided an opportunity to experience the vibrant Silicon Valley ecosystem, where research, innovation, and institutions are in constant dialogue. Among the most significant moments was attending an event featuring Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament, which offered an important opportunity to reflect on Europe's role in addressing the challenges posed by technological innovation and artificial intelligence.
This experience highlights the value of the international opportunities promoted by IUSS and the School's ability to connect its students with leading global scientific networks, fostering direct engagement with the researchers and institutions shaping the future relationship between technology, society, and law.
