Mario Lloyd Virgilio Martina, environmental engineer, former dean of the Science and Technology Class and coordinator of the National Doctorate in Sustainable Development and Climate Change at the IUSS University of Pavia, has been elected as the new rector. He will take over from Riccardo Pietrabissa, whose term will end on 31 August.

The only candidate, Martina received 85% of the votes in the first round of elections held on Monday, February 24, 2025. The term of office begins on September 1, 2025, and ends on August 31, 2031.

‘In the months to come, even before the official start of office, I will work with Rector Pietrabissa, who has made an extraordinary contribution to our School, for a smooth and optimal handover. I am grateful to the IUSS community for the trust they have placed in me and I will work hard to foster the growth of the School,' Martina said.

Mario Martina is full professor of Hydraulic, Maritime and Hydrological Constructions, former Dean of the Class of Sciences, Technologies and Society and coordinator of the National Doctorate in Sustainable Development and Climate Change. He deals with natural hazards and applications for the financial and insurance market. A graduate with honours in environmental civil engineering and PhD in hydrological modelling, he has consolidated his international experience through research in the USA and the UK. He has participated in and coordinated projects funded by the European Union, MIUR and international organisations, collaborating with public and private institutions including CNR, the Civil Protection and the World Bank.
