From 16 to 18 September 2026, Silvia De Toffoli of the Scuola Universitaria Superiore IUSS Pavia will take part in the eighth edition of the Masterclass in Philosophy of Mathematical Practices, organised by the Centre for Logic and Philosophy of Science (CLPS) at Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), in collaboration with Universiteit Gent.
Held in Brussels, the Masterclass will offer three days of lectures, presentations and discussions devoted to the philosophy of mathematical practices. The event aims both to provide an in-depth exploration of the topics addressed in the lectures and to offer early-career researchers – including Master's students, PhD candidates and postdoctoral researchers – an international setting in which to present and discuss their ongoing work.
Silvia De Toffoli will lead three sessions on 16, 17 and 18 September. The programme also features contributions from early-career researchers from European and international universities, addressing topics ranging from the formalisation and understanding of mathematical proofs to semantics in mathematical practice, chaos theory and the philosophy of statistics.
Among the participants is Simone Paolo Roca (IUSS Pavia), who will present Understanding Proofs As Models, exploring the idea that understanding mathematical proofs can be conceived as a practice of scientific modelling.
Attendance at the Masterclass is free and open to anyone interested, but registration is required.
