How does language emerge? What mechanisms govern its acquisition, use, and decline? The PhD in Theoretical and Experimental Linguistics (TEL) at the IUSS School for Advanced Studies Pavia offers advanced research training dedicated to the study of human language, from its formal structures to its cognitive and neural foundations.
The programme combines expertise in syntax, pragmatics, and computational linguistics, integrating theoretical analyses of language with experimental approaches drawn from psycholinguistics and neurolinguistics. Its aim is to understand how language is represented in the mind and brain, how it develops across the lifespan, and how it is affected by neurological and cognitive disorders.
Within an international and interdisciplinary research environment, doctoral candidates can pursue innovative projects at the intersection of theoretical linguistics, the neurobiology of language, and computational technologies, contributing to a deeper understanding of human communication.
📅 Applications are open until 16 June 2026 at 1:00 PM CEST.
