Analytic philosophers of mind have traditionally conceived intentionality as a naturalistically acceptable relation holding between a subject's internal states and the targets represented by those states.

Yet, recently, a growing number of philosophers has diverted from this tradition, analyzing intentionality in terms of a subject’s phenomenal experience (e.g. Kriegel 2011, The Sources of Intentionality; Mendelovici 2018, The Phenomenal Basis of Intentionality). This diversion is now gaining momentum, and the number of philosophers breaking free from the naturalistic tradition is rapidly rising; so much so that a "phenomenological turn" is now taking place in the analytic philosophy of mind. 

Unlike traditional phenomenology, analytic phenomenology is not exclusively a descriptive endeavor. In fact, analytic phenomenology aims to explain intentionality in terms of phenomenal properties and tries to expand the phenomenal domain to non-sensory states, defending the claim that cognitive states (such as beliefs and desires) have a phenomenology in their own right. 

Our workshop aims to investigate topics connected to this nascent "phenomenological turn" in analytic philosophy, including (but not limited to): 

● Non-reductive theories of phenomenal consciousness, including panpsychism and idealism

● Phenomenal intentionality and other non-reductive theories of intentionality

● Cognitive phenomenology

● For-me-ness and its role in phenomenal consciousness

● The relationship between analytic phenomenology and the cognitive sciences.

Submissions should be suitable for a 30 minutes long presentation, followed by 10 minutes of Q&A. Submissions should consist of two separate PDF files: a short abstract (no longer than 100 words) and a long abstract (no longer than 1000 words, title and references excluded). Both files should be suitably anonymized, and sent via email to: iussworkshop@iusspavia.it, no later than 23:59 CEST on 31 May 2021. During your submission, please specify the subject of the email as “Submission IUSS workshop”.

The workshop will be held online via Zoom, on October 13, 14 (14:30 - 18:00 CEST) and 15 (9:30 -13:00 CEST).
