DROP - Drone Remote Observation for Pipelines
Testo

Project name: Drone Remote Observation for Pipelines

Project acronym: DROP

Principal Investigator: Prof. Andrea Taramelli

Description: The DROP (Drone Remote Observation for Pipelines) project introduces an innovative solution for the remote monitoring of pipelines and refineries, utilizing multicopter drones and helium blimps equipped with state-of-the-art radar, optical, and hyperspectral sensors. The objective is to enhance safety, operational efficiency, and environmental sustainability through the precise and timely surveillance of energy infrastructures.
The platform integrates with existing monitoring systems, providing immediate information on asset status and enabling the detection of changes in the surrounding area, hydrocarbon spills, and gas leaks, thereby facilitating rapid and effective interventions.
The main objectives of the project are:
•    To develop an integrated system for the real-time detection of anomalies and environmental risks;
•    To reduce costs and hazards associated with inspections in difficult or dangerous areas;
•    To prevent accidents and environmental impacts;
•    To strengthen the competitiveness of the energy sector through the adoption of advanced technologies.
The distinguishing feature of DROP lies in the combination of advanced remote sensing sensors mounted on aerial platforms, capable of acquiring high-resolution data and imagery. The fusion of the collected data enhances analytical algorithms and allows for the more accurate identification of anomalous events and high-risk areas.
Furthermore, the implementation of Artificial Intelligence enables the integration of DROP data with information from existing monitoring systems, improving event classification and reducing false alarms. Thanks to its scalability and versatility, this solution can also be applied to other areas of critical infrastructure monitoring. The project is developed by a partnership of technological enterprises based in Lombardy, with consolidated expertise in the infrastructure monitoring sector.

Funding Institution:The project is funded by the Lombardy Region's European Regional Development Fund Regional Programme 2021–2027 (PR FESR 2021–2027) under the "Collabora & Innova" call. Link: https://fesr.regione.lombardia.it/it/pc2127/prlombardiafesr2021-2027
