Maria Arioli is currently a Tenure-track Assistant Professor (RTT) in Neuropsychology and Cognitive Neuroscience at the School for Advanced Studies IUSS Pavia. After graduating in Cognitive Neuroscience from the Università Vita-Salute San Raffaele (2016), she earned her PhD in Cognitive Neuroscience and Philosophy of Mind from IUSS Pavia (2020). She further refined her clinical expertise with a Level II Professional Master’s in Neuropsychology from the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan (2024). Before returning to IUSS, she consolidated her research experience as a Postdoctoral Fellow at prestigious national and international institutions, including the University of Milano-Bicocca (2020–2022), the University of Bergamo (2022–2026), and the Vrije Universiteit Brussel in Belgium (2025). Currently, her research activity focuses primarily on the study of the neural correlates of decision-making, with a specific interest in loss aversion, and social cognition, particularly regarding empathy and mentalizing processes. Her investigations span from healthy individuals to sensory-deprived populations, such as those with blindness or deafness, as well as patients with neurological impairments. To address her research questions, she adopts a multidisciplinary paradigm that combines experimental neuropsychology with neuroimaging techniques and the application of non-invasive brain stimulation tools.
