ANDREA MORO
Professor of General Linguistics at the Scuola Universitaria Superiore IUSS Pavia studies the relationship between the structure of grammars of human languages and the brain. He was a visiting scientist at MIT who began attending as a Fulbright student in the late 1980s and at Harvard University. Using artificial grammars, he found that the rules of language are not arbitrary inventions or conventions that depend on culture but are limited by the brain’s neurobiological architecture. He has published essays in various languages including Breve Storia del verbo "essere" (Adelphi; trad. ingl. A brief history of the verb "to be", MIT Press 2017) and Impossible Languages (MIT Press; trad. it. Le lingue impossibili, 2017 Cortina). The Secret of Pietramala (La Nave di Teseo, 2018) is his first literary work.
