On February 13, 2026, in the G. Marconi Library Hall at the headquarters of the National Research Council (CNR) in Rome, the National PhD in Science and Technology for Advanced Therapies (STAT) was presented. It is the first doctoral program in Italy specifically dedicated to advanced therapies.
This three-year program was developed by IUSS – Scuola Universitaria Superiore Pavia with the support of Fondazione Telethon and promoted by the University of Pavia and the National Center for Oncological Hadrontherapy (CNAO), with the aim of making a concrete contribution to the advancement of advanced therapies and ensuring that research carried out in Italy is competitive and effective at the international level.
The event provided an opportunity for dialogue and exchange among universities, research institutions, and industry partners, marking the public launch of a project supported by the Ministry of University and Research (MUR) and designed to strengthen doctoral training in the field of advanced therapies and precision medicine.
A New Educational Paradigm
The STAT PhD program was created with the goal of building a truly integrated pathway, in which basic research, technological development, and clinical application interact in a structured way. Its multidisciplinary approach allows doctoral students to move across different fields—from medical physics to molecular biology, from biomedical engineering to biotechnology—developing cross-disciplinary skills and a systemic vision of therapeutic innovation.
The three scientific pillars—advanced physical technologies, gene and cell therapies, and biomolecular and biotechnological sciences—represent the foundations of a project aimed at training researchers capable of operating in highly complex and interdisciplinary contexts.
The STAT PhD program seeks to educate a new generation of researchers able to transform scientific excellence into concrete therapeutic solutions.
