If you are a non-EU citizen, you can renew your residence permit at least 60 days before the expiry date. However, it is advisable to renew your residence permit before the expiry date.
For the renewal procedure, you can also pick up the kit at the post office and fill in the relevant application form at the Patronati (social security offices) which offer this service free of charge.
In order to submit your residence permit renewal application, you will need the following documents (photocopies must be in A4 format):
- photocopies of the passport page containing your personal details + 1 photocopy of the page with the visa for Italy + photocopies of all pages with 1 visa/stamp;
- a double-sided photocopy of your residence permit (expiring or expired)
- a declaration of enrollment in the IUSS School course, including any exams passed, to be requested from the Postgraduate and Research Unit;
- a declaration of accommodation;
- a €16.00 revenue stamp (available from any stamp retailer);
- a photocopy of documentation certifying the availability of adequate financial resources for the duration of your stay in Italy. If you have a scholarship, you will need to submit a copy of the scholarship award letter, indicating the amount of the scholarship;
- a photocopy of medical insurance valid for the duration of your residence permit.
For PSE renewal applications, after completing the application form, you must take it to a post office with a Sportello Amico service within 2 or 3 days at the latest.
The postal costs are €30.00 to send the postal kit by registered mail with insurance. You will also need to pay €70.46 for the issuance of an electronic residence permit (the payment slip is included in the kit) with a duration of more than three months and up to one year.
You can also check the status of your residence permit using your USER ID and PASSWORD (without the hyphen) by visiting www.portaleimmigrazione.it (enter your password and user ID in the area reserved for foreigners); another website where you can check this is the Italian Police Headquarters portal (enter your password in the white space, again without the hyphen).
The postal employee will check your passport (it is important not to close the envelope!) and give you a new postal receipt with an ID and PASSWORD to carry with you at all times until you receive your electronic residence permit. You will also be given a sheet indicating the appointment for your photo identification at the Immigration Office.
YOU MUST ATTEND THE APPOINTMENT FOR PHOTOGRAPHING ON THE DATE AND AT THE TIME INDICATED.
Generally, 1 or 2 months after having your photograph taken, you can collect your residence permit from the Immigration Office.
