Biography
Nicola Canessa, PhD Neuroscience
Full Professor (M-PSI/02), head of the Department of humanities and life sciences, and member of the academic senate, at the IUSS School. Director of the IUSS-Maugeri Cognitive Neuroscience Laboratory at ICS Maugeri (Pavia Institute).
After a Master of Science in Experimental Psychology (San Raffaele University, Milan, Italy; 1996-2001) he obtained a PhD in Neuroscience (Institute of Human Physiology, University of Parma, Italy; 2002-2006). Researcher at the Faculty of Psychology of San Raffaele University (Milan, Italy) from 2010 to 2014, and currently associate professor at IUSS-Pavia.
He spent research periods at the Department of Cognitive Science of the University of Arizona (Tucson, USA), at the sector of Cognitive Neuroscience of the SISSA (Trieste, Italy), and at the Institute of Medicine of Research Centre Juelich (Germany). His research activity is based on the application of neuroimaging techniques (particularly functional and structural magnetic resonance imaging) to the study of the neural bases of cognitive processes, and particularly decision-making (Decision Neuroscience) and social cognition (Social Neuroscience), both in health and disease. He is ad-hoc reviewer for several indexed scientific journals, as well as for national and international funding agencies.
